Otahi / Euge - Update

Just a quick post to let everyone (with growing concern) know the latest news from Flavio & Freya on Otahi. James recieved a SPOT update yesterday stating their position as N39.65 W34.10 putting them approximately 260nm from Horta. I have no idea why I have not recieved the same SPOT update on my Sat phone.

Anyway, they have actualy 'gone past' the Azores being slightly north of the islands, probably due to winds, or ... they have decided to carry on straight to the UK!
I hope its the former as a. as I have been waiting for her for 2 weeks and b. the weather forcast for returning back to the UK is far from ideal for at least a week.

Also, Marcus (of Veracity) has reported that Richard & Sarah of Euge have arrived safe in Falmouth.

Simon: Love the Internet and instant gratification of information. Name is Paula. I am the cook for the Azores to Amsterdam leg for Grateful Red, a C&C 121. She's on her way to Horta from Bermuda. Due in Tuesday if all goes well. Capt. Ken has a crew of two. When we set sail from Horta on July 13, there will be five of us. Currently I am in Calif. and have been sailing on Grateful Red for 4 seasons...mostly in Florida, Mexico, Bahamas and last summer in Lake Michigan. The boat gets trucked. Anyway, I'll be checking out more of your blog. I will be in Horta on July 2, flying in from Amsterdam. I'll need to scout all the markets for provisions and will be doing meal prep prior to the arrival of the crew. I'd love any information on food availability, prices, great local dishes, wine, etc. Anyway, I look forward to chatting with you.

Hi Paula.
Regarding food and drink (wine & coffee included) in general - it's so cheap here!

Restaurant menus can be a bit limiting in choice but what is available (mostly local style) standards such as fish, steak and pork. Don't be surprised if you get salad, chips, rice and a fried egg lying next to your steak on the same plate. Dont forget to check out the local cheeses - amazing!

The large Modelo supermarket (10 mins walk uphill) is superb for choice and there is also a 'van service' for another Grocery Store Dutras. They pick you up from the marina and return you with shopping FREE of charge - Christina (+351)910 539 446 (English Spoken).

Lastly, there is the fresh fruit & veg market in the town square.

Hope this helps...

Good info already. Thanks. How long are you going to be docked in Horta? Another task I am going to undertake is to find a restaurant that will allow me to freeze foods that I prepare a few days before we depart. How much do locals cater to sailors? Sounds good from what you said about the market lift. Tipping isn't a problem. Once the boat gets in and the current crew leaves, there might even be a list of sail repair or other boat chores for me. How's the marina service? Thanks for taking the time.

Hi again Paula.
Im waiting for a friend to arrive, which should hopefully be any time soon and then for the winds to change as it looks like headwinds for the next week.

Chandlers - check out Mid Atlantic Yacht Services (http://www.midatlanticyachtservices.com/) literally across the road from the marina (north end).
